EPA-approved wood stove with sealed-combustion design?

John Kidda| Posted inGreen Products and Materialson

I’m working on a retrofit that mandates that any wood stove must be EPA approved as well as have dedicated combustion air. I have had trouble sourcing a wood stove with a dedicated combustion air inlet . Is anyone aware of a product with this feature?

Almost all wood stoves sold in the US have dedicated combustion air kits available. What sort of stove size (physical dimensions, and BTU/hr output) fill the bill?

Some are only proximity air kits bringing an outdoor air duct very close to the air inlet on the stove, others are tight to the stove. No wood stove is perfectly air tight between the firebox and the room, but a tight-to-stove version will limit spillage during backdrafting, if not fully eliminating it.

Be sure to observe code prescriptives on combustion air duct materials and clearances, to avoid burning the house down. It won't get as hot as a flue during backdrafting events, but it can get hot enough to do real damage.
