Rough Lumber Rainscreen

I’m considering materials to use for a rainscreen under 1×8 shiplap siding. Will the variation in thickness in rough lumber telegraph through the siding?
Thanks,
John

John,
It really depends on the range of variance between the pieces. The rough lumber I get here is all dimensionally consistent, it just doesn't have milled faces. If the variance is over 3/16" you will probably see some waviness.
John,
I agree with Malcolm. I've used rough 1x3s for furring strips, and they've worked well.
It all comes down to the skill of your sawyer. Get to know your local mills. A good sawyer will be proud to produce lumber with consistent dimensions. Some sawyers don't care as much.
