Wood siding over wood siding

I have a 1953 detached garage that is (above the block foundation) wood planks that have been “ship lapped.” It actually looks very much like the sheathing on my home. Can I apply wood siding over this, just as I did on my home? I would treat the existing wood as sheathing, add Typar (or a greener option?), then new wood siding. Zone 5a CT. Thanks.

Jennifer,
Is the garage insulated or conditioned with its own HVAC system? I ask because owners sometimes have long-term plans for converting garages into conditioned spaces.
