Solving mysterious sometimes roof leak

thegiz| Posted inGeneral Questionson

Hi hope all is well. I have a small roof over my first floor living room. It angles up to a second floor gable roof ( I think that’s the term for a triangle roof). Last year during a windy storm the ceiling, wood plank, leaked about a cupful of water. Went up looked everywhere couldn’t find a leak. Never leaked again through several rain storms. Yesterday afternoon there was a tropical storm in NY, this time it leaked it about 4 or 5 spots about a cupful of water. It stopped leaking at some point when rain slowed down but it has been raining for 2 days and leak stopped. It must be angled rain, I’m thinking a window in front of roof is source since it only happens during windy rain. Should I be looking elsewhere? What is a easy fix if I can’t find this leak, the roof is small

I would check flashing. Wind blown rain can sometimes get up underneath flashing, and then sneak under the shingles and get inside. Anywhere you have things coming together at odd angles is suspect. The usual way to test is to blast suspect areas with a hose while a helper watches for leaks on the inside.
