Attaching planter boxes and the like
Is there anything special that needs to be done or kept in mind in principal to install things like planter boxes and hose reels to your siding in a rainscreen system (no foam).
My thinking was to just install furring wherever I know my fasteners for my planter boxes will be… or wherever my hose reel will be fastened put a couple of furring strips right there to catch the screws. Etc.
Because these aren’t penetrations, isn’t it much like installing a skirt board or any trim piece, and just have metal flashing over the top of any horizontal pieces where water could sit?
would things like these look best or is it best practice if they are also installed to blocking much like electrical boxes, host bibs, lights etc., or is blocking just for penetrations. (if not sure what I’m referring to see attachments)
thanks!

Kevin,
I've done it both ways, and didn't find any appreciable advantage to either approach beyond aesthetic ones. To me, having planters or hose-reels and the like mounted on blocks makes them look like they are meant to be there, and are an integral part of the house.
I think a free-draining gap between ANYTHING attached to or hanging from the building exterior is key to long-term durability.
