Insulating basement pipes
Mike here. Looking for thoughts on insulating basement water pipes prior and ceiling joists prior to installing drop ceiling. I’ve heard mixed opinions and that it could make basement cooler since it’s an unconditioned space.
thanks,

I don’t really see a downside to insulating pipes in the basement. Insulating cold water lines will help to prevent condensation and possible water/wetness issues. Insulation hot water lines will help to reduce energy loss and will also help to get hotter water to remote fixtures. I suppose insulating hot water lines will slightly lower basement temperatures, but only a tiny amount and that thermal energy isn’t getting to where it was supposed to go.
I prefer the pipe insulation with the pre-applied adhesive along the entire length of the split. This type costs a bit more, but it makes for a better installation.

Hi Mike -
As you finish your basement you are likely to find that you need intentional rather than incidental space conditioning. And many of us waste quite a bit of water waiting for domestic hot water, with the wait and waste reduced by pipe insulation.
