Intello vs. CertainTeed Smart Membranes

green654| Posted inGeneral Questionson

We are building a new house and we want to ensure a dry wall cavity long term. Considering installing either Intello or CertainTeed. Anyone familiar with the differences between the two? Is one better than the other? And I’m still confused as to exactly how they work? Thx!

I am not sure if one works better than the other but both have been used in various project on GBA. Pro Clima Intello is more expensive but it's a thicker material compared CertainTeed which is very thin.
That is the main reason I decided to pay more for Intello since I'm hoping it will make it more durable over it's life and mainly during the construction phase.

The RH/perms curve is substantially different with Intello being better.

Make sure that the wall complies with the recommendationshere.

I've been using Rothoblaas Clima 80. I found it to be significantly cheaper than Intello, and its been a great product. Their tapes are also very nice to work with as well. Their Flexi band tape is tenacious, and reinforced. Highly recommend.

I haven't tried the Rothoblaas membranes yet but I have some of their tape and it's very good. For variable permeance membranes, I use and spec Siga Majrex and Pro Clima Intello roughly equally, as they are both super tough and have low perm rates. Certainteed Membrain is about half the cost but the material is thin and flimsy, and the perm rate is higher, which in some cases is a good thing but in most cases it's not. I'd rather use Membrain than nothing but when the budget allows, it's not my first choice.

Here is an article (with lots of related resources) to help you understand the two products and how they compare:Smart Vapor Retarders for Walls and Roofs.
